Was ist Linux eigentlich genau?

Der Finne Linus Torvalds veröffentlichte 1991 einen Betriebssystem-Kernel unter dem Namen Linux – eine Zusammensetzung aus seinem Vornamen Linus und dem zugrundeliegenden Vorbild UNIX. Diese elementare Schnittstelle zwischen Soft- und Hardware wurde und wird seitdem als Basis einer Vielzahl von Betriebssystemen verwendet, die ebenfalls oft als Linux bezeichnet werden. Neben dem frei lizenzierten Linux-Kernel (seit 1992) stützen sich die Linux-Betriebssysteme zum Großteil auf die ebenfalls frei verfügbare GNU-Software. Die Pakete aus Betriebssystemkern und Software werden auch Distributionen genannt und erfreuen sich nach wie vor großer Beliebtheit unter den Entwicklern. Das liegt vor allem daran, dass sie zum einen schnell verbreitet werden und zum anderen wunschgemäß an die eigenen Bedürfnisse angepasst werden können. Zusätzlich zu Linux-Kernel und freien Software-Programmen können die Distributoren den Paketen auch proprietäre Anwendungen wie z. B. Adobe Reader sowie eigens erstellte Programme (proprietär oder frei) hinzufügen.

Im Laufe der Jahre wurden auf diese Weise unzählige Distributionen inklusive deren Derivate (Ableitungen) veröffentlicht. Zu den bekanntesten Linux-Betriebssystemen zählen Debian, dessen Derivat Ubuntu, Mint, Gentoo, Fedora, Red Hat (Enterprise), openSUSE und beispielsweise auch das Smartphone-System Android.

Was sind die Vorteile von Linux-Betriebssystemen?

Die größten Vorteile von Linux-Distributionen betreffen die Punkte Kosten, Flexibilität und Sicherheit. Die meisten Distributionen sind kostenfrei auf CD/DVD bzw. als Datei zum Download verfügbar. Haben Sie ein Linux-System auf Ihrer Festplatte installiert, können Sie diese auf jedem anderen Computer mit vergleichbarer Architektur verwenden, ohne System und Anwendungen erneut installieren zu müssen. Durch den modularen Aufbau entscheiden Sie zudem selbst, welche Komponenten Sie benötigen – je nach Rechenleistung Ihres Systems. Abhängig vom eigenen Geschmack können Sie auch zwischen verschiedenen Benutzeroberflächen wie Gnome oder Unity wählen. Sofern Sie sich nicht für eine kommerzielle Distribution entscheiden, profitieren Sie außerdem von der ständigen kostenfreien Weiterentwicklung Ihrer Plattform durch andere Benutzer oder verändern sie einfach selbst nach den eigenen Wünschen – völlig unabhängig vom Hersteller.

In Sachen Sicherheit punkten Linux-Distributionen vor allem durch kostenlose Verschlüsselungsmöglichkeiten und Optionen zur Beschränkung der Benutzerrechte, durch die beispielsweise im Unternehmens-Netzwerk der versehentlichen Start und die Verbreitung gefährdender Anwendungen verhindert werden können. Neben den angesprochenen Vorteilen – Flexibilität, Sicherheit, Unabhängigkeit vom Hersteller – sprechen für die Linux-Betriebssysteme besonders die geringen Anforderungen an die Hardware, die im Vergleich zu Microsoft wesentlich einfachere Lizenzierung sowie die exzellente Cloud-Unterstützung. Allerdings sollten Sie bei der Entscheidung auch die Nutzung durch die Clients berücksichtigen: Während Linux eine hervorragende Lösung für webbasierte Anwendungen wie E-Commerce- oder CRM-Systeme ist, hat Windows bei clientbasierten Diensten wie Office-Programmen die Nase vorn. Dass Linux-Distributionen auch als Serversystem immer die kostengünstigste Lösung darstellen, entspricht nicht unbedingt den Tatsachen: Während die Software in der Regel kostenfrei ist, kostet der Support häufig umso mehr.

Server-Administration per Befehl: Linux und die Shell
